For products that are always shipped in a fixed box, the recommended standard approach in Odoo is to use both product data and packaging configuration — but with clear roles.

• Product weight & volume:
  Maintain this including packaging. This is what Odoo uses for shipping calculations, stock moves, and logistics operations.
• Packaging + Package Type:
  Use this to define the physical box dimensions and logistics handling details (e.g., carrier integration, packing operations, warehouse flows).

This setup is not redundant, but rather complementary:

• Product → used for operational calculations (weight, valuation, shipping)
• Packaging → used for physical handling and logistics structure

For fixed-pack products (like your 3D printer example), this is the most upgrade-safe and standard approach in Odoo.
