Hello,

I am trying to understand the best standard, upgrade-safe setup in Odoo 19 Enterprise for products that are always delivered and shipped in the same fixed box.

Example: a 3D printer that always comes in the same box, with fixed:

  • weight
  • dimensions
  • storage/logistics data

My question is:

If we need the data for both storage and logistics, what is the recommended setup?

  • Should we maintain weight + volume (including packaging) directly on the product
  • and also create a Packaging linked to a Package Type for dimensions?

Or is that redundant in standard Odoo?

In other words:

For products with fixed packaging, do you typically maintain both:

  1. product weight/volume including packaging
  2. Packaging + Package Type for dimensions

We want to structure the master data correctly from the beginning using standard Odoo.

Hello Martin,

For products that are always shipped in a fixed box, the recommended standard approach in Odoo is to use both product data and packaging configuration — but with clear roles.

  • Product weight & volume:
    Maintain this including packaging. This is what Odoo uses for shipping calculations, stock moves, and logistics operations.
  • Packaging + Package Type:
    Use this to define the physical box dimensions and logistics handling details (e.g., carrier integration, packing operations, warehouse flows).

This setup is not redundant, but rather complementary:

  • Product → used for operational calculations (weight, valuation, shipping)
  • Packaging → used for physical handling and logistics structure

For fixed-pack products (like your 3D printer example), this is the most upgrade-safe and standard approach in Odoo.
