Hello Odoo'ers,

we are using the timer function for track the majority of our timesheet entry. Just go to the task, hit the "Start" button and when your finsished just "Stop", add description - that's it! Easy peasy, absolutely user friendly.

With v19.0 we faced the first problem: The "Pause" function was just removed! No hints in the release notes, nothing. Not good, but well "okay".

Now I just had a look at v.19.2 at runbot.odoo.com:

And now the timer functionality is fully new implemeted:

https://www.odoo.com/documentation/saas-19.2/applications/services/timesheets.html#using-the-timer

But I am absolutely not happy with the new function - and I am sure my collegues will be very frustrated and we will have serious trouble with the quality of our logged timesheet entries.

What are your opinions about this? Maye somebody from Odoo can drop some information on why this classic function needed to be rworked?!

Hello
Are you talking about which version 19.0 or 19.2?

Oh, I am talking about v19.2

And now I also saw, that the timer funciton was moved to the "check-in/check-out" button at the top - but when youre checked-in, your current attendence duration is not displayed anymore. To see your current attendance, you have to either check-out first! What th hell?!?

Codesphere Tech

Hello
I completely agree with your assessment. We’ve been testing the v19.2 changes, and the 'Timesheet Assistant' definitely feels like a step back in terms of UX friction.
-> If you check the Timesheet settings, the 'Timesheet Assistant' is actually labeled as BETA. It seems Odoo is using the SaaS community to 'stress test' this new centralized philosophy.
-> By hiding the attendance duration inside the 'Check-out' flow, they’ve made it much harder for users to monitor their own day in real-time.
Hope this helps you
Thanks

I think the "Timesheet assistant" (BETA) is not what I meant. I deactivated this in the settings to manually log the timesheets.

Meanwhile I thought a little about the new position of the timer at the top where it is always visible - That could actually be benificial. So you don't lose track of an active time in a task when you go on working in Odoo and maye switch to other tasks or other apps (sales, crm...).

But I am really really missing to current attendence duration without having to check-out.

Codesphere Tech

Yes Benjamin, I knew about the advantage of new feature. But I give the information based on the problem you shared.

Hey Codesphere,
thank you very much for all your valueable input on this topic! 👍

Hi Benjamin,
You're not alone — this has come up in a few corners of the community already. A few observations from someone who's been through a similar Odoo UX regression cycle:
On the Pause removal in 19.0
This was almost certainly tied to the broader rework that landed fully in 19.2 — they likely pulled Pause in 19.0 because the new timer architecture didn't support it yet, planning to either reintroduce it or replace the workflow entirely. Unfortunately Odoo rarely flags "temporary removals" in release notes; features just vanish and reappear (or don't).
On the 19.2 rework
Looking at the new docs, the timer is now more of a "global stopwatch with task assignment after the fact" model rather than the "open task → Start → Stop → describe" flow you (and we) have built muscle memory around. It's optimised for users who jump between many small tasks without pre-planning, but it actively hurts the workflow of users who work in longer focused blocks on a known task — which sounds like exactly your case.
Practical options:
Don't auto-upgrade. If you're self-hosted or on Odoo.sh, pin to 19.0 (or even 18) until you've validated the new flow with at least 2–3 power users from your team. Online customers unfortunately don't get this choice for long.
File it on the Odoo GitHub (odoo/odoo repo, issue with the timesheet label) framed as a workflow regression, not a feature request. Include a concrete before/after click count — e.g., "old flow: 2 clicks per entry, new flow: 5 clicks + 1 dropdown". Quantified regressions get traction; "I don't like it" doesn't.
Override in a custom module. The old hr.timesheet timer logic (timer_start, timer_stop, timer_pause on account.analytic.line via the timer_mixin) is still in the codebase — the rework is mostly frontend (OWL components + new controller actions). A ~150-line custom module can restore the old Start/Stop/Pause button on the task form view by re-binding to the legacy mixin methods. We've done this kind of UX-preservation override before for clients hit by similar reworks; it's maintainable as long as you're prepared to re-test on every minor upgrade.
Submit feedback through your Customer Success Manager if you're Enterprise. This is the channel that actually reaches the product team — the forum rarely does for design decisions already shipped.
On the "why" from Odoo's side
Speculation, but the new timer aligns with the mobile-first push and the Spreadsheet/Studio integration story (timer entries feeding directly into project dashboards without requiring upfront task selection). It's a defensible direction for new users but painful for existing power users — classic second-system effect.
If you want, I can sketch the custom module skeleton that restores the old Start/Pause/Stop button group on the task kanban + form view. It's the most pragmatic path if you can't delay the upgrade and the team genuinely depends on the old flow.

Hey Hari,
thank you very much for the detailled comment!
A customization is not really an option for us. Testing the standard setup before every upgrade once a year is already time consuming enough for us. We're a small company (Enterprise, Online hosted) and we cannot afford to put too much energy into maintenance of customizations - we have to stick to the standard processes.
But thank you very much for thie GitHub advice!
And of course we will get in touch with our Odoo contact to discuss this issue. I just wanted to get an idea of the perception by other users.
