I have a form that is available from a button on my main web page.  I want the users to click to fill out the form, but if the user is not logged in, they get a 404 Error.  This error does not happen when someone is logged in

Is there any way to fix this so they can fill out the form without being logged in and registered?

Hi,

A 404 error for anonymous users usually indicates that the page or controller is not accessible to the public user. By default, some routes require authentication (auth='user'), so logged-in users can access them while visitors receive a 404.

If this is a custom form, check the controller definition and make sure it uses:

@http.route('/your/form/url', type='http', auth='public', website=True)

instead of:

auth='user'

Also verify that the records being displayed are accessible by the Public user. Sometimes the route is public, but record rules or access rights prevent anonymous users from reading the data, which can also result in a 404 page.

If you're using a standard Odoo form created through Website Builder, ensure the page is published and that no menu or page access restrictions are enabled.

Users can submit forms without logging in, but you'll need to make sure both the route and the underlying model permissions are available for the public user.

Hope it helps

Hello Brian,

Yes, this is generally possible in Odoo.

A 404 error for non-logged-in users usually indicates that the form page, route, or related access permissions are restricted to authenticated users. You'll want to review the website page visibility and ensure the form is accessible to the Public user group.

If this is a custom form, also check whether the underlying controller or model access rights require user authentication, as that can cause anonymous visitors to receive a 404 response.

Hope this works for you! If you need any help implementing this or want a more optimized approach, feel free to reach out for further discussion.

Most likely one of the two things:

First check: is the page published? Open the page as editor and look for the Published / Unpublished toggle. Flip it to Published and test in a private/incognito window where you're logged out.

If it's published and still 404s check public access to the underlying model. This applies if the button leads to a custom form/page rather than a standard website form snippet.

If that's the case, you grant the public group access to the model(s) the form uses from Settings → Technical → Security → Access Rights (with developer mode on), add a rule for the Public group on the relevant model.

Let me know if either of those work.
