Hello everyone,

I am facing an issue after upgrading from Odoo 18 to Odoo 19 regarding the Windows Virtual IoT Box.

In Odoo 18, the IoT connection was based on the IP address. I was able to install the Windows Virtual IoT Box on each POS device separately, connect each device to my Odoo database, and each one appeared as a separate IoT Box.

After upgrading to Odoo 19, it seems the IoT Box identification has changed. Now, when I install the Virtual IoT Box on another POS device and try to connect it to the same database, Odoo does not create a new IoT Box like before.

Instead, it keeps trying to connect, and the connected devices/printers appear under the same existing IoT Box.

I suspect this may be because Odoo 19 is using the Windows UUID or another hardware identifier instead of only the IP address. In my case, the UUID appears to be the same on multiple POS devices, so Odoo may be treating all of them as the same IoT Box.

Has anyone faced this issue before?

My questions are:

  1. How does Odoo 19 identify a Windows Virtual IoT Box?
  2. Is it based on the Windows UUID, MAC address, IP address, or another identifier?
  3. How can I force Odoo to register each POS device as a separate IoT Box?
  4. Is there a way to reset or regenerate the IoT Box identity on each Windows POS device?
  5. If the issue is caused by duplicate Windows UUIDs, what is the recommended solution?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi Ali,

You are on the right path and you’ve already diagnosed this correctly. Here’s what’s happening and how to fix it.
Odoo 19 identifies the Windows Virtual IoT Box by MAC address, not IP address like Odoo 18 did. Internally it uses Python’s uuid.getnode() which derives a unique identifier from the primary network adapter’s MAC address. So if your POS machines were cloned from the same Windows image, they almost certainly share the same MAC address, which is why Odoo keeps treating them as one box.
To confirm this is your issue, run ipconfig /all on each POS machine and compare the Physical Address of the main network adapter. If they match, that’s your problem.

Here’s how to fix it:
1. On each POS machine, open Device Manager > Network Adapters > right-click your main adapter > Properties > Advanced tab > look for “Network Address” or “Locally Administered Address” and assign a unique MAC to each machine (format: 12 hex characters, e.g. 02AA00000001, 02AA00000002, etc.)
2. After changing the MAC, uninstall the Windows Virtual IoT from that machine and reinstall it fresh. This forces it to register a new identity.
3. Back in Odoo, go to the IoT app, delete the duplicate/conflicting IoT Box entry, then re-pair each machine separately using its own pairing code from http://localhost:8069.
4. During pairing, Odoo will prompt you to assign the IoT Box to a specific POS, make sure each one maps to its correct terminal.
Multiple IoT systems are fully supported at the same time in Odoo 19, so once each machine has a unique MAC, everything should register cleanly as separate boxes.
Hope that sorts it out for you, if not let me know we would be happy  to help.

Hello Ali,

In Odoo 19, the IoT Box identification mechanism has indeed evolved and is no longer based solely on IP address. It typically relies on a unique device identifier (such as UUID or hardware-based ID), which can cause multiple virtual IoT instances to be treated as a single device if they share the same identifier.

From your description, it’s very likely that your POS systems have duplicate system identifiers (common in cloned Windows environments), leading Odoo to group them under one IoT Box.

To resolve this, you can consider:

  • Ensuring each POS device has a unique system identity (e.g., regenerate UUID or check system SID in Windows)
  • Reinstalling the Virtual IoT Box after ensuring uniqueness
  • Avoiding cloned OS images without proper system identity reset

Currently, there’s no standard UI option in Odoo to manually force separate IoT Box registration if identifiers are identical.

Hope this works for you! If you need any help implementing this or want a more optimized approach, feel free to reach out for further discussion.
