I want to start using forum on my website as sort of a knowledge base but having some of the topics visible only to my internal users/ employees and some other topics visible to public users/ customers.
Is there an out-of-a-box way of hiding some of the forum posts according to different user groups or do I have to customize the forum module.

The easiest way is to use different forums for public and internal use.
I was thinking about this possibility myself as well. But my skills are still too limited. Maybe you can tell me how can I limit the visibility of forums by users ? Thanx!

You can define a custom field on the forum related model(s), to identify forums/posts visible to the general public, and use it to filter the records using a record rule for the "User types / Public" security group.
