L'ouverture effective de la première mine proprement dite n'a eu lieu qu’en 1946, au lendemain de la seconde guerre mondiale.
Le site minier est situé à IMINI dans la région de Ouarzazate, à 160 km au Sud-Est de Marrakech et à 45 km au Nord-Ouest de Ouarzazate, sur un plateau du flanc Sud du Haut Atlas, à 1500 m d'altitude.
