It seems I can add multiple Contacts with the same name. 

At which point does odoo inform me, that a contact by the same name already exisits? 

Are there settings that lets you dictate when a notification about possible duplicate entries is shown? i.e. when a company by the same name, or with the same address is set up?

Hi,

By default, Odoo does not enforce uniqueness on contact names; there is no built-in constraint that prevents you from creating two contacts (or companies) with the same name, email, or address. Odoo will not show any warning or block the save at any point during contact creation.

Options if you want to prevent or detect duplicates earlier:

    Data Cleaning app — available in Odoo Enterprise) — This module can detect and merge duplicate records after they have been created. It works by identifying records with similar names or contact details and presenting them for review. It does not prevent duplicates at the point of entry.
    Custom module / OCA module — a custom constraint (SQL UNIQUE constraint or Python _sql_constraints on res.partner) can enforce uniqueness or trigger a warning at save time. Several such modules exist on the Odoo App Store (search: partner duplicate, contact unique, duplicate warning).
    Automated action — a server action or Python constraint can be configured to raise a ValidationError When a matching name or VAT number already exists, without writing a full module.
