Upgrade from v16 to v17 with pricing changes?

Hi, community,

We have been using Odoo until v16e with the following modules: Project, Callendar, Employees, Fleet, Notyes, Discuss

Since those modules were free to use in the v16, I installed them, but in fact we were using the Project and Contacts only.

Now I run a test upgrade to v17. When it was ready I log in to the test database and noticed the sign in the menu screen:

"Your free trial will expire in 9 days. Register, or buy...."

Does it mean the modules/apps that were "free to use" in version 16 is no longer free in the new v17?

If yes, this is something unexpected!

Can someone explain me or point to proper documentation of this change? Because while I read the changelog for v17 this crucial information was not there.

Hi,

Yes, this behavior is expected in Odoo 17 and it is related to licensing changes, not a problem with your upgrade.

In v16, several Enterprise apps (Project, Employees, Fleet, Discuss, Calendar, Notes, etc.) could be installed and used without immediately triggering a trial notice. In v17, Odoo enforces Enterprise licensing more strictly at the database level. If any Enterprise app is present in the database (even if you are not actively using it), the system considers the database as an Enterprise instance and shows the trial message.

The warning does not mean your data is locked or that the apps suddenly stopped working. It simply indicates that the database is running in Enterprise trial mode.

This change is not clearly documented in the v17 changelog because it is a licensing and policy change rather than a functional one.

If you want to avoid the trial message, you must either remove all Enterprise apps and stay on Community-only modules, or register the database with a valid Enterprise subscription for Odoo 17.
