I do not know where to install Odoo v8 RC1 from to get all updates in future without having to reinstall it when final version will be released. There is one launchpad branch "trunk" and a GitHub v8 branch. I am on launchpad trunk now - do I have to reinstall from GitHub to have RC1 or is it still (because in About-menu, there is written alpha1)...

Launchpad was older platform that Odoo used, You should use Github only for latest releases and bug fixed versions:
