how to restore database for different versions of Odoo?

Hi community, I tried a couple of versions of odoo and seems there is a big problem in restoing the database for another version, especially for the big leaps such as v7->v8. Sometimes for the same version it just doesn't work with the same username and password. It the database broken during the backup? Do you have any tips to do this successfully?

You can't simply restore databases between different versions, especially not from V7 to V8, you have to migrate your data, because of the major structural changes in the system. Look for more information about odoo upgrade , maybe you also want to have a look at the upgrade module of the odoo community. If it doesn't work for the same version, we need more specific information about the issue.
