Odoo doesn’t support direct version-to-version upgrades by default because the system cannot automatically migrate the database and custom addons between major versions.

Each major version introduces structural changes in models, fields, and business logic, which prevents a simple in-place update.

Database migration is possible for Enterprise users using the official Odoo Upgrade Service provided by Odoo SA.

This service upgrades only the standard Odoo database structure and core modules.

Custom addons are not migrated by Odoo and must be manually updated by your own developers or partner.

If you use Community edition, you must rely on tools like OpenUpgrade or third-party migration providers.

All custom code must be adapted to the new API changes in Odoo 17 before you install it on the upgraded database.

A full test environment is required to validate all workflows after the migration before going live.
