Import products with variants and barcodes

Question

Hi, I've read the docs about importing products over and over again.
Is it right that importing products with variants needs to be done in these steps?
1. Import attributes
2. Import main products
3. Export main products for updating
4. Import/update main products with their variants
5. Export variants for updating
6. Import/update variants with their own specifications (barcode, price, stock, etc)
Is it really necessary to do this in 6 steps? Or is it possible to combine this into 1 step, or at
