My users want to login to the system using their username, not their email. Is this possible?
Of course, there is a workaround. I set email = name, and that works. However that way I lost an important information, user's email.

Hi Luca,
You can actually handle this out of the box.
1) Create an user with a name instead of an e-mail:
2) Open the contact that is automatically created and fill in the e-mail in the form:
3) The user his preferences now contain the e-mail that you need (email@example.com):
