The old help forum had this fancy karma diagramm and a list of lost and won karma.

In sites like Stack Overflow merit points are a very important factor in maintaining high quality questions and answers. Knowing *why* karma was gained/lost helps newbies clean up their act. Generally they act as a vital decentralized cleansing agent for the whole community. If you find the quality of this forum to be much more variable and generally poorer than similar ones, look to lack of karma feedback as the top reason.
