Odoo 19 Enterprise — How do the three Work Order reschedule modes work?

I'm using Odoo 19 Enterprise and I see three reschedule modes at the top of the Work Orders Planning view:

  • Manual Reschedule
  • Auto-Reschedule (Use Buffer)
  • Auto-Reschedule (Keep Buffer)

I've enabled Work Order Dependencies and set "Blocked By" relationships in my BoM, but I can't find clear documentation on how these three modes actually behave in practice.

Could someone explain:

  1. What does each mode do when I move a work order in the Gantt view? How do dependent work orders react in each case?
  2. What is the "buffer" these modes refer to? Is it configured somewhere explicitly, or is it just the gap automatically created at initial planning between two dependent work orders?
  3. What needs to be configured in the BoM or work centers for these modes to work correctly?

A simple example with a 2-operation BoM would be ideal.

Thanks.

Thank you for your answer.

Is employee working hours affects the gap between WOs too?

Hello Alfa,

Yes, indirectly.

Employee working hours and resource calendars can influence when a work order can be scheduled, especially if the work center or assigned resources are unavailable during certain periods. In such cases, Odoo may place the next work order in the next available time slot, which can create or increase the gap between dependent operations.

However, the "buffer" used by the rescheduling modes is not defined by employee working hours itself. It refers to the scheduled gap that exists between work orders after planning. Working calendars simply affect how that schedule is generated.

Hope this clarifies it!

Hello Pierre,

These modes control how Odoo handles dependent work orders when you move an operation in the Gantt view:

  • Manual Reschedule – Only the work order you move is affected. Dependent operations are not adjusted automatically and must be rescheduled manually.
  • Auto-Reschedule (Use Buffer) – Odoo tries to absorb the change using any existing gap (buffer) between dependent operations. If the delay exceeds the available buffer, downstream work orders are pushed accordingly.
  • Auto-Reschedule (Keep Buffer) – Odoo maintains the original gap between dependent operations and shifts downstream work orders while preserving that spacing.

Regarding the buffer, it is typically the planned time gap between dependent work orders generated by scheduling, rather than a separate parameter that you explicitly configure.

For these modes to work properly, make sure:

  • Work Order Dependencies are enabled.
  • Operations are linked through Blocked By relationships in the BoM routing.
  • Work centers and operation durations are configured realistically.

Example:

  • Operation A: Cutting (08:00–10:00)
  • Operation B: Painting (11:00–12:00)

If Cutting is moved later:

  • Manual: Painting remains unchanged.
  • Use Buffer: Odoo first consumes the 1-hour gap before moving Painting.
  • Keep Buffer: Painting is moved while preserving the 1-hour gap.

Hope this works for you! If you need any help implementing this or want a more optimized approach, feel free to reach out for further discussion.

Regards,
