From its headquarters in Rockville, Maryland, N5 Sensors develops advanced environmental intelligence solutions designed to protect communities from environmental hazards. As the company scaled its hardware and software offerings, it adopted Odoo as a unified ERP platform to connect sales, marketing, manufacturing, and supplier management in a single system.

In this customer success story, Debra Deininger, Chief Revenue Officer at N5 Sensors, explains how the company moved from disconnected tools and spreadsheets to an integrated operational model; and why that shift is essential to supporting international growth.

About N5 Sensors

Founded in 2012, N5 Sensors operates in the deep tech sector, developing what it calls environmental intelligence: a tightly integrated combination of physical sensing hardware and software analytics. Its first product addressed wildfire detection, and its solutions continue to focus on sensor-based technologies that require close coordination between engineering, manufacturing, and commercial teams.

"We use a unique combination of hardware and software to protect our communities from environmental hazards."

As N5 Sensors matured its hardware products and brought them to market, the complexity of coordinating sales, production, and fulfillment increased, making operational alignment a critical requirement.

Disconnected Operations Before Implementing Odoo

Before implementing Odoo approximately three years ago, N5 Sensors relied on a mix of tools. Sales and marketing teams used HubSpot, while manufacturing and fulfillment were managed through custom spreadsheets and standard Microsoft Office tools.

This separation created friction across teams. Once a deal closed, order details had to be manually re-entered into manufacturing systems, increasing the risk of errors and slowing execution. “Sales would do one thing, and then we would take the quote and the customer order over to manufacturing and say, ‘Here you go, type it all in again and set it up,’” Deininger recalls.

As N5 Sensors evolved into a full hardware-software provider, the lack of integration between commercial and operational teams became unsustainable. The company needed a flexible ERP capable of handling software sales, hardware orders, inventory, shipping, and customer data within a single platform.

From Isolated Tools To An Integrated ERP with Odoo

The initial push toward Odoo came from the engineering team, which was searching for a more robust alternative. That recommendation quickly resonated with the commercial organization as a way to resolve growing integration challenges.

"Odoo did a very nice job of helping us get into a professional ERP to go along with our marketing and sales tools."

Chief Revenue Officer at N5 Sensors

Today, Odoo serves as N5 Sensors’ central operational system, supporting multiple business functions across the organization.

Managing complex industrial sales with Odoo CRM:
Within the commercial team, N5 Sensors uses Odoo CRM to manage its industrial sales pipeline based on internally defined criteria. Pipeline stages are configured to reflect long and complex sales cycles, allowing for structured opportunity tracking and fast, reliable reporting. This approach gives management clear visibility into deal progression while keeping sales execution aligned with operational planning.

Quote management and change traceability: N5 Sensors frequently manages large, technically complex orders, where customers may request changes after an initial quote is issued. Using Odoo’s quotation management tools, the team can update a single quote rather than creating multiple disconnected versions. All revisions remain visible, improving traceability and coordination across teams.

"Odoo is super convenient. We don’t have to keep generating five different quotes. We can work on the same quote, make updates, and everybody can see what changed and when."

Chief Revenue Officer at N5 Sensors

For hardware manufacturers, this level of transparency is especially valuable when orders evolve throughout the sales cycle.

Connecting sales and manufacturing workflows: One of the most impactful improvements has been the direct integration between sales and manufacturing. Previously, order data had to be manually reconfigured once a deal closed. With Odoo, information flows automatically from sales to production, eliminating duplicate work and reducing administrative overhead. According to Deininger, this integration saves hours on every order and significantly reduces internal friction, which is an important advantage for a company delivering both hardware and software products.

Centralized contacts and marketing activities: N5 Sensors also relies on Odoo Contacts and Marketing to maintain a single, unified database of customers and partners. Centralizing this data supports consistent communication and prepares the organization for more structured outbound marketing efforts.

As the company shifts from reputation-driven growth to more proactive marketing, it plans to expand its use of Odoo’s email marketing and automation tools.

“We’re at a point where we want to invest more in marketing,” says Deininger. “We’ll be taking more advantage of the tools within Odoo to support campaigns.”

Supplier coordination and organisational alignment: Beyond sales and marketing, Odoo supports supplier management and operational coordination across manufacturing and fulfillment. While Deininger’s role focuses on revenue and commercial strategy, she emphasizes that Odoo’s greatest impact has been organizational alignment.

"The number one thing that Odoo did for us was get everybody onto one platform."

For deep tech and hardware startups, this shared operational environment enables closer collaboration between engineering, manufacturing, and commercial teams.

What’s Next: Supporting International Growth
with Odoo

Looking ahead, N5 Sensors is focused on expanding beyond North America as demand for its environmental intelligence solutions grows internationally.

Scaling globally requires systems that can handle increasing complexity without fragmenting operations. Odoo plays a central role in that strategy by providing a single, scalable platform to support sales, manufacturing, and marketing as the business grows.

"Odoo is really important in supporting that growth ambition."
