Has anyone found another way to generate sales tax based on a customer's zip code without paying for Avitax?

Yes, I did
Hi,
It's a combination of two elements: Fiscal Position and Taxes.
If you want to apply a specific tax rate for a particular country, the correct approach is to first create the tax itself, and then set up a dedicated fiscal position for that country.
While creating the fiscal position, make sure to enable automatic detection and specify the target country in the "Country" field.
After that, in the tax mapping section, link the default tax to the new tax you want to apply for that country through the fiscal position
Hope it helps
