I understand that if my Odoo database and filestore is 10GB, I need to pay for that space.

I don't understand why I need to also pay 10GB for each backup?

With compression, those backups should take up less space than production.

I expect to pay less for the backup storage since it should take up less space - is Odoo compressing the backups?

Interesting comment considering customers typically don't pay full price for every copy of every backup on other platforms. I'll repeat the question? Why is there no compression of the incremental backups?

There is compression.

As stated in the first line of my answer!

We charge for the space needed for 3 full backups but guarantee access to 42 backups.

Each backup "costs" the price of a little over seven (7) percent of the storage of production.

What is absurd about that?

Odoo is compressing backups.

Remember we guarantee
- 1 backup per day for 7 days
- 1 backup per week for 1 month
- 1 backup per month for 3 months

Each of these backups is kept in three locations.

So we are storing (7 + 4 + 3) * 3 or FORTY TWO backups for each Customer.

Compressing the filestore does not generally save space, compressing the database absolutely does.

Odoo is UNDER CHARGING for the backups.  Just keep this between us!!  We chose to do it this way so it is easier to predict storage - if the nature of the compression changes Customers would see storage and billing increase without a clear reason why.
