I have been working on an existing OpenERP project. In this project, every model has an attribute which is "_description". But I did not find this attribute in the listed object attributes in the documentation. Is this a standard attribute?

Yes it is a standard attribute. You can find the description in the Technical Memento (https://www.odoo.com/files/memento/OpenERP_Technical_Memento_latest.pdf).
