Hi Gurus


I am helping someone set up their ecommerce platform and need some guidance on how to manage taxes. In Australia, we need to charge GST on all sales however, if the purchaser is outside of AU, then we don't charge GST.

I messed about with pricelists etc. however I cannot see a way of having the GST included for only domestic customers. 

Any suggestions??

Hi,

Use Fiscal Positions
Fiscal Positions are Odoo's built-in way to handle different tax rules based on customer location.

Step 1: Set Up Your GST Tax
    Go to: Accounting → Configuration → Taxes
    Click Create
    Name: GST 10%
    Tax Type: Sales
    Tax Computation: Percentage of Price
    Amount: 10%
    Tax Scope: Services and Goods (or based on what you sell)
    Save

Step 2: Create Fiscal Positions
A) Domestic (Australia) - WITH GST
    Go to: Accounting → Configuration → Fiscal Positions
    Click Create
    Name: Australia (Domestic)
    Detect Automatically: Check this
    Country: Australia
    Tax Mapping Tab:
        Leave empty (this means use default taxes on products)
    Save

B) International - NO GST
Create new Fiscal Position:
    Name: Export / International (GST Free)
    Detect Automatically: Check this
    Country Group: International (or leave empty to apply to all non-AU countries)
OR for specific countries: Create separate positions for each country
    Tax Mapping Tab (THIS IS KEY):
        Click "New".
        Tax to Apply: Configure a "0% Export" tax
        Fiscal position: Export / International (GST Free)
        Tax to replace: Select GST

This mapping says: "When GST would normally apply, apply nothing instead"
Save
Step 3: Set Default Tax on Products
Go to your products:
    Sales → Products → Products
    For each product:
    Open the product
    Go to General Information tab
    Customer Taxes: Select GST 10%
    Save

Now all products have GST by default.
This setup will automatically charge GST to Australian customers but not to international customers

Note: These setup steps may change based on the Odoo version; this is specific to Odoo 19 Enterprise.
