Consider the following situation:

  • Milestone 1 
  • Task 1
  • Task 2
  • Milestone 2
  • Task 3
  • Task 4

Milestone 1 must be complete before Tasks 1 and 2 can start. Milestone2 is only achieved after Tasks 1 and 2 are complete. Milestone 2 must be complete before Tasks 3 and 4 can start.

I am using Odoo Community Edition v17 and am open to installing open source third party modules (OCA, etc).

How is this meant to be handled in Odoo? As I currently understand it Milestones are basically more of an analytic accounting device than a project management tool. However I would like to see whether the above set of dependencies can somehow be represented in Odoo.

Thank you very much for your response. So a "Gate Task" is just a regular Odoo task, but acts as a placeholder to make sure tasks 3 and 4 cannot be started until tasks 1 and 2 are complete ? I guess that could work, but there are two caveats:

  • I would have to explicitly mark "Milestone 2 Gate" as done before I can proceed to tasks 3 and 4 which is an additional manual step
  • Milestone 2 Gate is still a "task" in the system with all associated metadata, when in reality it is more a "point in time". For example, it could represent the receipt of a particular document or notification from a client. A team member in our company would not immediately be able to tell this difference by looking at a list or kanban view.

I hope you are doing well

Problem: Odoo 17 CE milestones are for invoicing/grouping, not dependencies. You can't make tasks depend on milestones natively.

Solution: Use "Gate Tasks" instead of milestones:
Milestone 1 Gate
        │
        ├──► Task 1 ──┐
        │             ├──► Milestone 2 Gate
        └──► Task 2 ──┘           │
                                  ├──► Task 3
                                  │
                                  └──► Task 4

Create regular tasks named like milestones and use standard task dependencies (depend_on_ids). This works in Gantt view and blocks downstream tasks properly.
