Hello,

I'm not quite sure what routes I need set for manufactured products.

If I want to use Three-Step Manufacturing and have that checked as a route, would the Manufacture route still need to be checked?

If I have subassemblies 1, 2, and 3 that are sub-boms to make a finished product using a manufactured BoM, would a route still need to be placed on those subassemblies if I have the route set on the top level finished product?

If I'm using Kit BoMs, the type that isn't manufactured, If I have manufactured finished product BoMs within a Kit, what route should used? Would I need to add a 4th step that updates kit product quantities from the 3rd after storing finished goods?

Hi Alec, please find the in-line answers to your queries below:

1. If I want to use Three-Step Manufacturing and have that checked as a route, would the Manufacture route still need to be checked?

  • Yes. The "Manufacture" route tells Odoo that the product is made in-house. The "Three-Step Manufacturing" route just changes how the product moves in the warehouse

So, both routes must be enabled on the product for the three-step process to work.

2. If I have subassemblies 1, 2, and 3 that are sub-boms to make a finished product using a manufactured BoM, would a route still need to be placed on those subassemblies if I have the route set on the top level finished product?

  •  Yes. If your finished product is made from subassemblies, you need to set the "Manufacture" route on each subassembly. Odoo does not copy the route from the final product to its parts — you must set it for each one.

3. If I'm using Kit BoMs, the type that isn't manufactured, If I have manufactured finished product BoMs within a Kit, what route should be used? Would I need to add a 4th step that updates kit product quantities from the 3rd after storing finished goods?

  •  A Kit BoM means the product is not manufactured, it's just a group of items picked together during delivery.
  •  Set the "Manufacture" route on that product
  •  Make sure it's already made and available in stock before delivering the kit
  •  Odoo does not update kit quantities when components are made — because kits are just virtual.

We hope this helps! In case you need any further assistance- you can reach out to us!

Thank you for the information.

So, the customer makes a purchase and sees it as 1 package containing multiple finished products. That package is the Kit holding all the finished products. It's not the Kit that's being sold, its the contents. If Odoo doesn't update Kit quantities, do we have to manually add it to the Kit product and adjust the finished product quantity? Would it make more sense to switch from a Kit product to a manufactured product?

Hi Alec,
Please find the in-line answers below:
Q: Do you need to manually adjust the Kit quantities in Odoo?
No, there’s no need to manually adjust the Kit quantity.
However, you must ensure that all the individual components (finished products) included in the Kit are available in stock.
Kits themselves don’t hold inventory — Odoo checks the availability of the components, not the Kit as a whole.

Q: Should you switch to a Manufactured product instead?
Yes, if you want to manage and track the entire package as a single unit.
In this case, Odoo will generate a Manufacturing Order for the full package.
You’ll only need to manage the Kit product in inventory, without tracking each component separately during delivery.
