I am trying to figure out how to configure my BOMs for situations in which a top-level product has components which are made as part of a "nest."  A nest refers to a situation where a single piece or raw material (like a sheet of steel, or a length of wood) yields multiple different components.

This is with Odoo 19, and I am using MTO.

I have read that the way to handle "nests" is by using "by-products" (component = the raw material, and by-products are the products produced by the nest).

So let's say that we're manufacturing a product called "lock box."  Its components include one each of "lid," "body" and "bottom."

Let's say that I have a laser cutting nest named "lock box laser nest" that uses 1 sheet of steel, and has by products of 3 lids, 3 bodies, and 3 bottoms.

So... for the top-level product (lock box), if its BOM lists 1 each of lid, body and bottom, the problem is that Odoo doesn't know that those products are made only from the nest (the by-product don't have their own BOMs), so it doesn't drill down into consuming the ultimate raw material (which is a sheet of steel, or more specifically a third of a sheet of steel).

Any ideas of how to structure this to make it work?

try this way:

select a "master product"

in its bill of material select as component the sheet metal

in the by product tab add the other product

every time you produce a 1 "master product" you will have also the the other products

update:

I would use a multi level BOM

Master contains in example

--> lid 1

--> top 1

--> body 1

then the lid has own BOM and as by product: top and body

this BOM has the correct ammount of Sheet of steel

top and body can be snozed in the replanishment

you can have more then bom associate to the lid to produce different by products

in this way the master product MO pull for the quantity of the lids

it will generate a different MO for the lids that has a side product the top and the body

Thanks Ettore, after many attempts I came up with a solution that almost works. In the top-level (master) product's BOM, I include the "lock box laser nest" product, AND the by-products that are made in that nest which are needed by the master product. So effectively, when the master product consumes the "lock box laser nest," it consumes the sheet of steel, and it puts the by-products in inventory. And then the master product consumes those by-products.

Great... But, since the nest is making multiple sets of the by-products (3x lid, 3x top, 3x body), but the master product ("lock box") is only using one of each, it ends up making too many parts.

For example, if I had a MO for 10 of the master product ("lock box"), I'd end up with 20 extras of the by-product components.

I suppose it is possible that in the master product's BOM I could have only used 0.333 units of "lock box laser nest" which theoretically would make a correct number of units, but using decimal numbers like that could definitely cause other issues. Plus in reality, sometimes the quantities of components made in a laser cutting nest aren't so clean and equal.

Any other ideas?
