How to import BOMs with variants as component using plain text?

Hi everyone!

I know how to create BOMs by importing plain text excel/csv and it works great. Until one of the components exists with different variants.

Example: We have a product "Paint" with attribute values "red" and "blue", it is a component of any main product.

If in excel/csv I give "Paint (red)" as a component for the main product it will raise an error, same for "Paint (blue)". If I give "Paint" only, odoo will accept but always add the first variant to the BOM. So I'm not able to tell which variant should be taken. If I go with IDs, everything is fine (of course).

How can I solve this?

I tried in V10 and V12, same behaviour.

This is an example of a BOM we can import, but for the highlighted column I get an error:

No matching record found for name 'Paint (red)' in field 'BoM Lines' between rows 2 and 4

Hi Johann, I'm facing the same problem you had back then in 2019 with Odoo 13 CE. Did you get to solve this issue? Can you explain me how? Thanks

In Odoo 18 I succeeded by importing on two steps:
1. Import BOM definition without Components and Operations
2. Importing BOM Components as second import. I was importing only:
--> BOM [External ID]
--> add column with [Product Variant External ID] and map it to [BOM Lines / Components / External ID]
--> [BOM Lines / Quantity]
--> [BOM Lines / Product Unit of Measure]

Hi,

In the Odoo once you activate the product variants features in the database, in the bill of materials form view, a new field named Product Variants will get displayed. Using this field you can do the above case.

Suppose if you have two variants for the product named Paint, with variants Color Red and Color Green. In the Bill of material form view, In the Product field(product.template) you can choose the Paint and in the field named Product Variant(product.product) choose Paint( Red) or Paint(Green).

Regarding you logic, specified the plain text, not sure how you done it. You can alter the case accordingly.

I know how to create in form view and also how to create with import using IDs, but I don't manage to import with plain text. As long as the components have no variants, everything is fine, but since there are variants, I face this problem...

imho didnt understand correct issue, can i know how you are importing the data to the system ? using the default odoo import export option right ?

Yes, exactly. But I can call the column "product_tmpl_id" and import "T-Shirt" or I call it "product_tmpl_id/id" and import the related id (like "__export__.product_template_51_46199f68").

Here you are specifying the product.template only, use the field product_id in your file and specify the variant in it. You can do one thing, create a BOM with specifying the product variant field and export the records with the fields product.template and product.product .

But see, for the component I have both, bom_line_ids/product_id and bom_line_ids/product_tmpl_id.
